Interview Advice

Preparing for the interview
Remember the commonly known motto “fail to prepare, prepare to fail”.

Prepare for your interview properly
Find out as much information about the company as possible e.g. use the internet or ask family, friends and colleagues if they know of them. This will show the interviewer you have a keen interest in their company and indeed the current vacancy.
Make sure that throughout the interview you have a positive attitude. Make sure you know the location where the interview will be taking place.
Arrange your transport in advance, making note of any appropriate timings, allowing extra time for any unexpected events that may occur (delays etc).
Eye contact is very important during the interview.  If there is more than one person interviewing you, ensure you divide your attention between them all.
Make a good first impression by choosing appropriate attire for the occasion.
Arrive slightly early at the interview, to allow yourself to be calm and focussed.
Definitely make sure you know the name and position of the person who will be interviewing you.
Prepare just a few questions to ask the interviewers (they will normally ask you if you have any).  This will again show that you are interested and keen to start for them.

The Interview
It is a good idea to back your answers up with examples taken from your own work experience.

If you are faced with a challenging question during the interview remain calm and positive.
Always highlight your strong points.
Be conscious of your body language as a good posture will help make a good impression – no slouching.

Pitfalls
Ensure you dress smartly.
Don’t answer yes or no – this is a limited response and won’t show enthusiasm.
Never lie about anything – you will be caught out.
Don’t chew gum during the interview.
Never make derogatory statements about your present or former employers.
Hold back from asking about salary, holidays, bonuses or any other benefits – you will deal with this at the second interview.

Closing the interview
Find out what happens next with the interview process and express your interest once again.
Let your consultant know your feedback as soon as possible. It is very important for us to know what you thought of the organisation, the role you were interviewed for, the people who interviewed you and your impression of how well you performed. Please also let us know if you are interested in taking the job if it were to be offered to you.
